Continuing Medical Education for Anesthesia and Its Importance to MOCA

Continuing Medical Education or CME is a method for all medical professionals to stay updated in the latest technologies and discoveries in their field of choice. This is very important because medical science is an ever changing science, and what was true while you were still in school may not necessarily be considered to be helpful now. MOCA or Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology is an on-going process of assessment of one's medical licensure specifically for anesthesiologists.

The concept of Maintenance of Certification started in 1999 with the ABMS or the American Board of Medical Specialties. Because ABA or the American Board of Anesthesiology is a member of ABMS, they implemented MOC activities. It was also a way for ABA to prove that they were committed to making certain that all their professional members strive for quality patient care as well as clinical outcomes. As I said, MOCA is a program that requires life-long commitment to the maintenance and improvement of an anesthesiologist's quality of work. Only after a diplomate completes all MOCA requirements within ten years will he be awarded with a certificate for MOCA and be allowed to continue to practice in the specialty and subspecialty of anesthesia.

The MOCA program has four parts and this is where continuing medical education comes in. The first part is the professional standing assessment. In order for a diplomate to complete this part, he or she must maintain an active and unrestricted license to practice his or her profession in at least one part of the United States or Canada. The second part is the lifelong learning and self-assessment. As a diplomate, you must dedicate yourself to engage in continuing medical education with a total of 350 credits; at least 250 of those should be Category 1 credits. The third part is the cognitive expertise assessment. In this part, a diplomate must successfully complete an online test prepared and provided by ABA. A third of the test will be regarding general anesthesia and the rest will cover subspecialties in the field. The fourth and final part is the practice performance assessment and improvement; here a diplomate will be assessed in his performance in the clinical area either by peer review or case evaluation and simulation.

Although continuing medical education is only technically required in the second part of the MOCA program, it is necessary in the completion of the rest of the parts. If you look closely, continuing medical education is still required on the third and fourth part of the program wherein you will be tested on your knowledge and skills. With proper CME, you can ensure that you stay up-to-date with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide quality service.

Mexican-American studies program nixed by Ariz. education chief (The Lookout)

Arizona's top education official told Tucson educators they must stop teaching or significantly alter a Mexican-American studies program that is ostensibly in violation of a state law, or else lose millions of dollars in funding from the state. There's just one problem--Arizona's own investigation of the program found that there's nothing illegal about it.

Education?Superintendent?John Huppenthal says the program, which is taught to about 650 high school juniors, violates last year's controversial state law that bans K-12 programs that "promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment toward a race or class of people, are designed primarily for pupils of one ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity," according to The Arizona Republic's Emily Gersema.

The Tucson district can lose about $15 million--or 10 percent of all state aid--if they don't come in compliance within 60 days, the paper reports. However auditors hired by Huppenthal found no issues with the Tucson program. And students support the program. "I get really emotional because this class helped me a lot," Olivia Payne, an African-American student told CNN. "We're a family. We're one, and it's teaching us we can make a difference in this country. I don't want this class to be taken away."

Huppenthal's auditors report that students participating in the program graduated at a higher rate than their counterparts who don't enroll in the program. "No observable evidence was present to indicate that any classroom within TUSD is in direct violation of the law," the auditors said, according to The Arizona Daily Star. They observed 40 percent of the classrooms participating in the program for 30 minutes each.

In concluding the program broke the law, Huppenthal said some course materials referenced white people as "oppressors" and stressed Hispanic unity. More than 90 percent of students enrolled in the courses are Hispanic, which Huppenthal argues advocates "ethnic solidarity" in violation of the law.

Huppenthal also criticized the course's website for language he said indicated?it was originally designed for a particular ethnic group: "formed specifically to enhance the?academic success of Latino students." But the?full sentence says: "While the Mexican American Studies Department was formed specifically to enhance the academic success of Latino students, the?educational model and?curriculum developed by the Mexican American Studies Department help all students." Auditors said they did not find evidence that the program was exclusionary, but raised concerns that the course did not provide enough guidance to teachers to ensure all the materials were appropriate at a high school level.

Tucson officials say the program has helped to lower the city's high school dropout rate and improve attendance, since the kids who take the courses feel more connected to the material. Tucson administrators also say the curriculum is designed to make students examine their assumptions about race and think critically about traditional historical narratives.

Students in the program have told reporters they love the classes.

"Ethnic studies allow me to read and view and analyze different forms of literature and learning from another perspective," student Krysta Diaz, 17, told EdWeek reporter Mary Ann Zehr.

Eleven teachers and the director of the Mexican American Studies Department are suing the state over the law in federal court, arguing it violates the First?Amendment. The former schools superintendent, Tom Horne, had already decided the program was not in compliance with the law before he left office, but Huppenthal commissioned his own investigation before deciding.

3D Portable Projectors - To Explore The World of Education

Nowadays, the first priority of any educationalist, teacher or lecturer is to look out for Digital Projectors which carry remarkable image clarity and immense portability. Certainly, they look out for technologically advance projectors that can capture pupil's attention using latest technology.

Truly, nothing can capture the attention of pupils like a 3D projector. It is a wondrous resource which can plunge the pupils in the world of interest grabbing 3D curriculum. The best part is that with 3D projectors; pupils tend to remember more and learn more. Perhaps, Portable Projectors help a great deal in remembering lessons full of graphics, images, animations, sound and text for a lifetime.

Some of the advantages of using a 3D projector in a School or College are as follows:-

Offers Incredible Image Quality
3D Projectors offer extra fine image quality. Their remarkably vivid image quality can turn ordinary lessons into 3D lessons in order to bring new wonders in the classroom.

Captures Students attention
Just imagine; the level of ecstasy; students will feel; when such helpful gadget will be installed into their classrooms. With the help of 3D ready portable projectors, even the most complex and difficult to understand lessons can be made easy and interesting to learn.

Promotes Active learning and participation
3D projectors help a lot in eradicating communication gap between pupils and teachers. Moreover, they encourage classroom participation and improve knowledge retention up to a great extend. Students can indulge themselves in real-time interactive problem solving activities and enhance their critical thinking skills.

Bringing lessons to Life
The biggest benefit of using 3D Projectors is that they can add a 'wow' factor into the existing curriculum as well. 3D projectors are unique and yet appealing in their approach. Teachers can use 3D projectors to perform virtual dissections of frog in the science class or explore virtual topography to bring geography lessons to life and make them all the more interesting for the students. Right from the live world of the internet to PowerPoint presentations, from music videos to historical movies, from science lab experiments to mathematics tutorials, everything is possible with 3D projectors.

Compact and Portable Solution
Portability of 3D projectors is the biggest advantage. Schools and institutes which can't afford individual projectors to be installed in each and every classroom can prefer 3D ready portable projectors. Such projectors are easy to carry from one classroom to another classroom and that too single-handedly.

Idaho voters to decide fate of education overhaul (Reuters)

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) – A group seeking to repeal Idaho's new education laws, including one stripping teachers of most collective bargaining rights, has enough signatures to place the measures before voters, state election officials said on Tuesday.

Idahoans for Responsible Education Reform needed the signatures of more than 47,000 Idaho voters for each of the three laws that made up an overhaul of education recently approved by Idaho's Republican leaders.

The Idaho Secretary of State's Office on Tuesday certified the signatures of 74,000 voters for each of the measures, which will be placed on the November 2012 ballot.

Backed by Republican Governor Butch Otter and Tom Luna, the state's elected schools chief, the GOP-dominated legislature this year passed the overhaul of public education despite statewide protests by the teachers union and some parents and students.

The overhaul was spelled out in a package of three laws, including one that ended tenure and removed from teacher contract negotiations issues like class size and workload.

Another tied pay raises and bonuses for educators to factors like student performance instead of seniority.

A third required high schools to equip students with mobile computing devices, forcing many districts to shift funds from teacher pay to technology.

Luna said in a written statement that the referendums threaten public education in Idaho, adding: "Repealing these laws would mean a return to status quo."

Luna said he was confident a majority of Idaho residents supported the overhaul.

Michael Lanza, head of the parent-led group pushing for the repeal, said the number of Idaho voters who signed petitions speaks for itself.

"The fact that we far surpassed our goals is a powerful statement about public dissatisfaction," he said.

Idaho was one of several states this year where Republican lawmakers sought to curtail the labor rights of school teachers and other unionized public employees.

Homeless mom who became education touchstone busted for selling crack, cops say (The Lookout)

Tanya McDowell, the homeless mom in Connecticut who started a national debate when she was arrested for enrolling her son in a neighboring school district, has been arrested for allegedly selling crack and marijuana and offering prostitutes to undercover cops.

According to the Stamford Advocate, the sales happened three times between May 27 and June?3, one of them during her son's birthday party. Police claim she offered them two women she was pimping out at her aunt's house.

McDowell's attorney, Darnell Crosland, says the sting was "retaliatory," a result of city officials' embarrassment at the national attention her arrest in April brought. "The whole thing stinks," Crosland told the paper.

In April, McDowell faced 20 years in prison for charges of first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny for signing up her 5-year-old son to attend nearby Norwalk schools under the address of a friend. She told local reporters she sent her child to Norwalk schools, instead of Bridgeport, where she was living at the time, because the Norwalk school was better. Her arrest ignited debate on inequalities in the public education system, and drew the support of civil rights figures such as Al Sharpton.

Parents rarely become targets of criminal prosecution in false address cases.
