Suspected pipe bomb part of Ohio student project (AP)

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – What authorities in Ohio feared was a pipe bomb left in the bleachers at a school track has turned out to be a prop in a summer class project.

The Springfield News-Sun reports sheriff's deputies and firefighters called for a bomb squad Monday evening and the area was closed off after a 10-inch pipe with metal end caps was discovered at Shawnee High School in Springfield, about 45 miles west of Columbus.

The newspaper reports the squad was told not to come when a school official got in touch with a teacher who described the item and said it was made for a summer class geocaching (JEE'-oh-ka-shing) project. Geocaching is a sort of outdoor scavenger hunt that uses GPS to locate hidden objects.
